Creating Compelling Content

During the second year of university, I took a module called Creating Compelling Content. As part of the module we had to write five types of content: a blog, a feature article, a listicle, a press release and a social media plan. Here are descriptions for each piece of content:

Blog:

This blog post is about Ria Hebden’s visit to BCU. The blog is intended to be posted on the BCU We Are PR blog, that is run by BCU staff and students. This is because it suits the target audience of media students, particularly ones that are interested in presenting or TV. The purpose of this blog is to inform students about how to be a successful presenter and to entertain people that just want to hear about Ria’s career in the media. The tone is informal, to make it easy to digest, simple to read and relatable to the audience. However, the blog is more formal than other blogs because I wanted it to fit the BCU We Are PR brand. I was inspired to write this blog post because I attended the talk and wanted to write about it for BCU We Are PR.

Feature Article:

This feature article is about blogger Brummymummyof2’s visit to Birmingham City University and what she had to say about working online and in the blogging industry. This feature article is intended to be published in Style Birmingham, a regional fashion, beauty and lifestyle magazine that is based online. I wanted to publish this in a regional magazine that focuses on fashion and lifestyle because I think Style Birmingham will have a similar audience appeal to the blogger, Brummymummyof2. The article could also be posted on Birmingham City University’s news and events page. The target audience are mothers around the ages of 30-45 and students at Birmingham City University that are interested in the bloggers content or the blogging industry. Style Birmingham will appeal to women around the ages of 28-35 who live in Birmingham and are interested in fashion and lifestyle. The purpose of this feature article is to entertain and educate. It will appeal to fans of Brummymummyof2 and university students who may be interested in a career in the media or influencer relations. I was inspired to write this feature article after I attended a talk by Brummymummyof2 when she visited Birmingham City University.

Listicle:

This listicle article is about what to do on International Women’s Day. The listicle is intended to be posted by a lifestyle editor for Cosmopolitan UK. I think this is an appropriate platform for this listicle because Cosmopolitan are popular for their fun and informal listicles and this listicle is designed for an audience in the UK. The listicle is appropriate to be posted on the online site for Cosmopolitan UK or on their Snapchat magazine, that is increasingly popular with young people. The target audience are young females between the ages of 16-25 that are interested in celebrating International Women’s Day. The purpose is to inform the audience about IWD and inspire them to get involved in activities that can make a real difference to people’s knowledge and lives. This listicle is more serious than most of Cosmopolitans listicles, but I used an informal and witty tone that matches their similar posts. I tried to use examples in the listicle to inspire the audience. This could be part of expanded content by creating a competition that could involve the audience winning tickets to a networking event on IWD and the listicle could be discussed on a podcast that also appeals to the same audience.

Press Release:

This press release is about Sarah Jones, Head of BCU’s School of Media, doing a workshop for the BBC event, Fierce Women in Media. This press release is designed to be posted by the BCU Press Office on the BCU news page because it is a platform with a majority audience of students at BCU. The target audience are students at the university, primarily female and on the media and communications course. The press release appeals to this audience because it is about the head of media school at BCU and promotes BBC3’s Event Fierce Women in the Media, which aims to empower women that are involved in the media industry or are planning on going into the media industry. The purpose is to inform the audience about the event and promote the achievements of the head of BCU’s Media School. Attending the event and hearing from the BCU Press Team during the module, inspired me to write about the event for the university.

Social Media Plan:

This social media plan is designed for a month of content for Fabletic’s Instagram page. Fabletics is a fitness apparel company that appeals mainly to women between the ages of 18-25 who want to buy affordable fitness apparel. I chose to use Instagram because Fabletics have a following of more than one million people on the platform and Instagram is most popular with their target demographic as 90% of Instagram users are under 35. Instagram also has various features such as posting photos, videos, stories and live streams and has a huge following of people interested in fitness. The purpose of this social media plan is to promote the products and increase their audience engagement on their platform. The content is also used to entertain and inspire the audience. The theme of the posts is popular with the target audience, such as motivational posts, food and professional photos. Fabletics embraces diversity and empowers women of all sizes to get fit, unlike a lot of popular athletic appeal companies, which makes them stand out from competitors. I used the story and InstaTV features to show the authentic side to the company. I have used influencer relations because a lot of the Fabletics audiences will be familiar with influencers and Instagram is a popular platform for influencers that endorse brands. The influencers I chose have likeminded vales to Fabletics.
